Do It Yourself Hot Tub Cover

on . Posted in Hot Tub News & Blog

hot-tub-coverWe always encourage do-it-yourself(ers) and we wanted to give you some idea about how to build your own hot tub cover.

Even though a new spa cover from Northcoast Spa may be less than $350, for many cash-strapped spa owners, making their own spa cover for under $150 may sound better.  ??

Materials Needed to Make Your Own Spa:

  • 2- 2″ thick 4×8′ Polystyrene Foam Boards
  • Heavy Duty Adhesive in caulk tube
  • 2 – 4×8′ Plywood Boards
  • Heavy Duty Plastic
  • Exterior Paint for Wood
  • 2 – 4′ Continuous Hinges and screws

Reasons you may not want to make your own hot tub cover

Even though it may be less expensive, but…
  • The heat retention of a DIY spa cover is half of a hot tub cover from NCSpa.
  • An homemade hot tub covers will be difficult to lock, to keep it secure.
  • In cold weather (like in the Cleveland area), your hot tub may not stay warm.
  • If there is no rigid support panel, a do-it-yourself cover will have difficulty staying flat, and will warp.
  • If the cover bends toward the water, rain and snow melt will drain into the hot tub water - and with it dirt and debris.
For a real cover, take a look at our covers information.  If you are bent on a DIY project for your spa, try building a gazebo, privacy screen, bench or shelves.
